Are you feeling overwhelmed with your child’s Potty Training Regression?, potty training is perhaps one of the most difficult things that you will do as a parent.
It takes time and patience and consistency so when you are making progress and then you’re taking steps backward in the training process, it can be very frustrating.
When your child is taking two steps forward and one step back this is known as potty training regression and it is actually quiet common in toddlers who are potty training and it is usually something that corrects itself over time.
Potty training regression may take place for many reasons. Usually, regression will occur when a child is going through a period of adjustment. Many times it is the birth of a sibling that will cause the regression.
In some cases it can be something as simple as moving from the little potty to the big potty or even changing teachers at pre-school. Every child is different, but generally it takes place when the child is dealing with changes that he or she cannot control.
If your child experiences potty training regression you should not be upset with him or her. Instead, try to be understanding and think about what may be causing the regression. Do what you can to make your child feel as safe and loved as possible. You should not allow for the regression to become something that you punish your child with. Instead, you should celebrate each and every success, building up confidence again.
In some cases potty training regression lasts just a few days while other times it will last weeks or months. Remember that potty training is an individual experience, so you cannot compare your child to other children. Just continue to be consistent and loving about the process.
If you have to, backtrack and do what you did in the early days by rewarding with a chart, stickers, etc. When you stick with what you did the first time around the child will know what to expect and will probably respond more quickly.
Many times parents need to back off the potty training all together. Sometimes the child just needs a break from the potty for a couple weeks, but you should feel the child out.
If they do not want to attempt to use the potty it may be better to back off for a while until the child is open to the potty again.
Sometimes stress that the child picks up on in the home or pressure that they may feel is being put on them about training or from anything else that may be going on in their lives can cause this setback, especially things like moving house, starting pre-school, separation or divorce of parents.
Anything like this can mean a big setback and bring on potty training regression.
